Fun Facts about Phase 1 Motorsports


 

  • Phase 1 Motorsports was started by Doug Elliott in 2004 and was originally a driver development program.
  • Doug Elliott won his first race in 1982.
  • Doug has won numerous races in sprint cars and stock cars mostly out on the west coast and has competed in many racing series including NASCAR, USAC, and the Lucas Oil Late Model series to name a few.
  • Rick Gabor joined Phase 1 Motorsports in 2009 and is a retired airline Captain having logged just over 14,000 hours of flight time.
  • Phase 1 Motorsports is a multi car and multi driver team with NASCAR standout Johanna Long and Sprint Car Champion Danny Martin along with Nashville’s Hunter Robbins sharing the wheel duties.
  • Phase 1 Motorsports is a proud supporter of the National NCPRS “Race Against Drugs” program. This is a 21 year old program sponsored by private donations and US Government tax dollars to help K through 5th  graders learn the difference between the good drugs (Medicine) your doctor gives you and the bad drugs that you can get illegally on the streets. It is a proven successful program among the thousands of youth in this nation.
  • From 2011 to 2013, Johanna Long raced 9,301 laps for 12,141.3 miles in NASCAR and she is only 22 years old!
  • Sprint Car Champion driver Danny Martin is a Sioux Native American. Are we looking at the first Native American to go to NASCAR?
  • Amanda Ferguson was a driver for Phase 1 Motorsports 2 years ago but decided to take a break from driving race cars to pursue her college education.
  • On May 8th, 2015, Amanda graduated from the University of Central Florida after taking classes in Aerospace Engineering and graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree, literally becoming Phase 1 Motorsports’ first real ‘Rocket Scientist!
  • Phase 1 Motorsports takes delivery of a bare chassis and builds a complete race car including hanging the body all in their New Smyrna Beach race shop! It takes about 6 weeks to complete the entire car.
  • Phase 1 Motorsports purchases their race motors from only the best engine builders in the industry. Each motor has a different race application developing from 590HP to about 700HP and the cost of a new race engine can vary from $20,000 to $35,000. Each new motor is only good for racing approximately 500 miles and then needs to be sent out to be rebuilt at an average cost of about $7,000.
  • Race tires on the Phase 1 Motorsports cars cost about $150 apiece and are only good for about 65 miles of actual racing! We use 8 to 16 race tires per race depending on the race! Like your street car, our Phase 1 Motorsports race cars use four shocks. The difference is…..our racing shocks cost about $1,500 each. Racing fuel is about $9.00 a gallon and we get about 5 miles to a gallon of gas!
  • The Phase 1 Motorsports team puts our driver’s safety above everything else that we do as a race team. Our drivers are well protected. Our race chassis have built in crush zones to absorb some of the initial accident impact energy along with professional installed roll bars built around the driver for optimum protection and a full containment seat with a Simpson 5 point harness and seat belt restraint system holding our drivers in place.
  • Fire protection for the Phase 1 drivers consists of a 5 pound fire extinguisher onboard fire suppression system, Nomex fire resistant underwear, Nomex fire resistant gloves, Nomex shoes and a fire retardant driver’s suit. This is literally “capped off” with a carbon fiber helmet equipped with a HANS device. A safe and well equipped driver can run a team over $10,000 and is worth every penny of it!
